Here are some of our favorites:

Hoya

They are extremely long-lived, have a classic, deep green, vining foliage and produce fragrant, light pink and red star-shaped flowers. Because of their thick waxy, foliage they are often called wax plants or sometimes porcelain flower referring to the unique texture of the flowers.

Select a place that gets bright, indirect light. Use potting soil with good air circulation and drainage. Let the top layer of soil dry between watering. In the fall and winter growth naturally slows down and they won’t use as much water. Use a humidifier to bring the humidity levels up, especially in winter when indoor air tends to be dry. A saucer with gravel and water also provides humidity as the water evaporates.

Hoya macrophylla

Philodendron

Philodendron are popular, versatile, and easy to grow houseplants. There are over 200 different varieties, some with split-leaf foliage, some with variegation but all are rewarding and quite easy to grow

Philodendron can survive with very little light but will grow faster and healthier in bright indirect light. They will sunburn in harsh, direct sunlight.

The potting mix and container should promote good drainage. Water when the top 50 percent of the soil is dry, about once a week. If the foliage begins to turn yellow, it’s an indication of too much water. Average home humidity levels are fine but an occasional misting or rinsing off the leaves would be beneficial.

Sanseveria

Sanseveria’s are very easy to care for and they help cleanse the air.  According to Nasa, it’s a top-notch air purifier by removing toxins such as toluene, nitrogen oxides, xylene and formaldehyde from the air. Especially people with allergies benefit from this.

Bright light with a bit sun and a bit of shade. Allow the soil to dry and then drench it completely allowing the water to run freely from the drainage holes in the pot. Use potting soil with excellent drainage.

Orchids

We receive seasonal shipments of orchids directly from Hawaii. This allows us to carry hard to find varieties. Growing orchids may sound intimidating, but it shouldn’t be. Like any plant, once you find out what growing conditions are preferred, the rest is easy. Our orchids are labeled with the genus and species name which is key to determine the culture needed for the plant to thrive and bloom.
