It’s a giant.
Bromeliads are stunning indoor plants. They have few needs and very few pests. With the right care, you can have success growing bromeliads in your home or office.
Perhaps the biggest challenge of growing tropical plants indoors is providing humidity in the winter. Bromeliads prefer 60% humidity and there are some ways you can increase the humidity in your home or office. Here are some general guidelines for Bromeliad care.
- Run a humidifier near your plant.
- Create a humidity tray. Simply take a shallow plant saucer, or tray, and fill it with small pebbles or decorative stones. Fill the tray with water to just below the surface of the stones. It is important to make sure the plant pot is not setting directly in the water. This will keep the bromeliad’s roots too wet and can result in root rot.
- Use a spray bottle to mist the plant regularly.
- Provide bright light without direct sun exposure.
- Keep air flowing around the plants.
- Make sure the plants stay moist but not soggy. Do not over water.
- Provide adequate drainage.
- Fertilize sparingly (around the roots, not in the tank in the foliage center)
- Keep a bit of water in the tank of the plant. Occasionally dump the tank out and refill, keeping it fresh. Do not use a metal container for water.
