Do you like the notion of having a living Christmas to decorate and then plant outside after the holiday is over?
We do offer living trees, with a root system in either a burlap or pot, for those who want to try it.
First of all, consider the weight of the tree. Secondly, the tree can only be inside for 3 to 4 days maximum.
Here’s the gist of how to be successful with a living Christmas tree.
1. Plan ahead!
Dig the hole and fill it with pine needles, hay, or any loose material which will not solidly freeze. Save the soil where it won’t freeze to use in the planting of the tree after Christmas. Live trees are heavy! 4 foot tall trees weigh approximately 150 pounds.
2. Choose a tree early for best selection.
Live Christmas trees are usually available in mid-November. Your tree can be paid for, tagged, and reserved at the Nursery for pick-up. If possible, come to the Nursery during daylight hours to pick up your tree.
3. Important.
Please remember, a living tree should not be kept inside at room temperature for any longer than 3-4 days.
4. Before planting outside.
The tree must be gradually acclimated to the cold weather. Ideally, it should go outdoors during the day and be brought inside to a cool (but not freezing) area at night for several days.
5. Planting.
After the critical hardening period, the tree can be planted, thoroughly watered in and mulched with no further special care.
BECAUSE OF THE EXTRA CARE NEEDED, LIVE CHRISTMAS TREES ARE NOT GUARANTEED
